Campopisano

Campopisano is a medieval square in Genoa's historic center with a distinctive pebble surface. The pavement shows a pattern in white and grey depicting the shape of a galley ship.

After Genoa's victory over Pisa in 1284, this area became a burial ground for thousands of Pisan prisoners. The site retained its importance as a central gathering place for the city over the centuries.

The pebble arrangement here shows a typical Ligurian craftsmanship technique where stones are laid in geometric patterns. This method appears throughout the region's noble houses and public spaces.

The square sits near major landmarks in Genoa's old town and is easy to reach on foot. Narrow streets from here lead to restaurants and shops in the surrounding area.

The pebble mosaic underwent complete restoration in 1992 and now displays the ship pattern with special clarity. The restoration happened during a year marking an important anniversary related to maritime exploration.
