Campopisano, Medieval square in historic center, Genoa, Italy
The stone square features a distinctive mosaic pavement made of white and grey pebbles arranged in the shape of a Genoese galley ship.
After Genoa's victory over Pisa in 1284, this area served as a burial ground for thousands of Pisan prisoners who never returned home.
The decorative pebble technique called risseu represents a regional tradition found throughout noble Ligurian estates and public spaces.
Located near major landmarks in Genoa's old town, the square connects with narrow streets leading to local restaurants and shops.
The pebble mosaic received complete restoration in 1992 during celebrations marking 500 years since Columbus's journey to the Americas.
