Torre delle Mandre

Torre delle Mandre is a stone structure positioned on elevated ground between Altavilla Milicia and Trabia, spanning two different territories. The building offers views of the Sicilian coastline and has maintained its original features despite multiple restorations over time.

The structure was built during Sicily's Aragonese period and first appeared in written records in 1557. Afterward, it served as a defense post against pirates from the Maghreb region.

The tower represents medieval defensive architecture and was part of a network of coastal watchtowers that protected local communities. These structures shaped how settlements developed across the region.

The site is accessible by car via the A20 motorway or by train from Palermo, with the nearest station about one kilometer from the center. The elevated location provides shelter from weather and allows far-reaching views across the surrounding area.

The building spans two different administrative boundaries and retains its original architectural identity despite multiple overhauls. This unusual placement made it historically difficult to assign responsibility and manage maintenance.
