Castle of Ocre, Medieval castle in Ocre, Italy

The Castle of Ocre stands at 933 meters above sea level on Mount Circolo, featuring seven defensive towers and walls that extend for 470 meters.

The first mention of the Castle of Ocre appears in a 1178 papal bull from Pope Alexander III, documenting it as part of the Diocese of Forcona.

The castle contains ruins of a church dedicated to San Salvatore, which once displayed a 12th-century fresco of Madonna with Child, now preserved in L'Aquila.

Visitors reach the castle through Via del Convento, where they can explore the medieval ruins, tower houses, and narrow streets within the triangular fortification.

The structure functions more as a fortified village than a traditional castle, incorporating residential spaces, defensive elements, and communal areas within its walls.
