Church of Santa Giusta fuori le mura

The Church of Santa Giusta fuori le mura is a Romanesque structure with a golden stone facade arranged in three tiers of columns and a rectangular floor plan containing three naves. The interior preserves architectural elements from different periods throughout its history.

This structure was built in the 9th century and required major reconstruction after a 1214 earthquake caused severe damage. The 1238 rebuilding shaped it into the Romanesque form seen today.

The crypt displays Roman and Romanesque stone elements that reveal how early Christians furnished their sacred spaces. These underground remains help visitors understand how religious buildings evolved over time.

Following major damage from the 2009 earthquake, the building underwent comprehensive restoration and reopened in 2020. Keep in mind that this is an active place of worship, so visiting hours may be limited to specific times.

The underground crypt contains rooms carved directly from bedrock and runs in the opposite direction to the main church above. This unusual arrangement reveals how early Christian communities created sacred spaces beneath the surface.
