Parco del Sole, Urban park in Collemaggio district, L'Aquila, Italy
Parco del Sole is a green space in Collemaggio that spans several hectares and serves multiple functions for visitors. The grounds include a playground, a modern amphitheater with roughly 1800 seats, and fitness areas where people can exercise outdoors.
After the 2009 earthquake that severely damaged the L'Aquila region, the park was rebuilt and modernized through substantial work. The restoration between 2016 and 2018 brought the space back to life as a central gathering point for the community.
The Amphisculpture was designed by American artist Beverly Pepper and uses materials sourced from nearby stone quarries in the region. Today it serves as a gathering place where residents come together for concerts and public events.
A tactile map with QR codes at the main entrance on Piazzale di Collemaggio helps visitors with sensory disabilities navigate the grounds. The park is well-designed for different needs, with both shaded and open areas depending on how long you plan to spend there.
During winter months, the stage area transforms into an ice-skating rink, offering visitors different ways to enjoy the space year-round. This seasonal change keeps the venue active for recreation across all seasons.
