Acquafredda, Coastal village in Maratea, Italy

Acquafredda is a coastal village in Maratea that sits about 87 meters above sea level, surrounded by pine forests descending from the mountains to the Mediterranean waters below. The settlement spreads across hilly terrain with narrow streets leading down toward the working harbor and waterfront.

The settlement developed as a fishing community along the Tyrrhenian coast and was connected by a railway line in the 1800s that opened new economic possibilities. The construction of Villa Nitti in the 1920s as a seaside retreat reflects the area's growing appeal to political figures during that period.

The village maintains a strong connection to maritime traditions, with fishing still playing a role in the daily rhythm of the community and shaping how people interact with the waterfront. This relationship to the sea influences the character and social life of the place throughout the year.

The village has basic facilities including a post office and a train station with regular connections along the coast. The steep streets require comfortable walking shoes, and visiting in the early morning helps you explore the narrow lanes without crowds.

A freshwater spring flows directly into the sea near Marizza beach, creating visible bubbles that can be spotted from the highway nearby. This unusual natural feature results from an underground source breaking through the rock formations.
