Casteddu Etzu

Casteddu Etzu is a castle on a hill near Cuglieri with remaining sections of perimeter walls, a defensive tower, and underground water storage systems. The stone structures clearly show how the fortification was organized and what purposes the different areas served.

The castle was founded in 1186 by Ittocorre, brother of Judge Barisone II, and marked the southern border of the Logudoro kingdom until 1410. Its long use shows how important this place was for controlling the region over several centuries.

The fortress reflects medieval military architecture of Sardinia and shows the strategic defense methods used during the Logudoro kingdom. You can see how the site connected with other regional fortifications and what role it played in territorial protection.

The ruins lie about three kilometers from Cuglieri town center and are reachable via the provincial road connecting Montiferru with Marghine. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the area is open and sunny.

The castle preserves an advanced medieval water system with underground cisterns that supplied drinking water to military garrisons. This technical skill shows how castle builders of that time solved challenges like fresh water scarcity in remote hilltop locations.
