Panzano Observatory

The Panzano Observatory is an astronomical observation station located near Castelfranco Emilia, outfitted with telescopes and scientific instruments for studying the night sky. It sits in a rural setting within the Emilia-Romagna region, offering clear views of the heavens away from the light pollution of nearby cities.

Cornelio Malvasia founded the observatory in the early 1640s as a center for astronomical research, quickly attracting leading scientists of the era. The site became an important location for advancing astronomical knowledge in Italy during a period of significant scientific progress.

The observatory represents a milestone in Italian scientific advancement, marking the development of astronomical studies during the scientific revolution of the 17th century.

The site sits in the flat landscape of the Po Valley and is easily reached by roads that pass through farmland and small villages. It is best to visit during clear weather for optimal viewing conditions, and the area becomes quite dark at night for astronomy.

The observatory grounds witnessed the Battle of Panaro in 1815, where Neapolitan forces achieved victory against Austrian troops during the Neapolitan War.
