Quezzi inclined elevator, Inclined elevator in Quezzi district, Genoa, Italy.
The Quezzi inclined elevator is a cable car system in the Quezzi district of Genoa that links two street levels on a steep hillside. The cabin tilts as it moves to keep passengers standing on a level floor throughout the journey.
The project started with a public tender in 2004, and Maspero Elevatori completed and opened the system in May 2015. This solution was built to improve connections in the steeply sloped neighborhood.
This transportation system represents contemporary Italian engineering solutions for urban mobility in cities with steep geographical characteristics.
The system carries about 25 people per trip and completes the journey in roughly 90 to 100 seconds. The elevator is especially useful for those who have difficulty walking uphill and includes a mid-point station.
Solar panels on the cabin roof help power the system and reduce its energy needs. This makes the lift an example of sustainable design adapted to the steep terrain.
