The Floating Piers, Art installation in Italy
The Floating Piers was a bright yellow walkway made of fabric and plastic that connected the town of Sulzano to Monte Isola across Lake Iseo. The path stretched about 16 meters wide and was built from thousands of individual modules linked together to float on the water's surface.
The installation was designed by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude and realized in June 2016 as a tribute to Jeanne-Claude, who had passed away two years earlier. The project was always intended to be temporary, with a planned removal date from its very conception.
The artwork allowed people to walk directly between the shore and the island, creating a shared moment of connection across the water. This temporary passage brought visitors from different places together in a single flowing experience.
Access was free and the artwork attracted thousands of daily visitors who often waited in long lines to walk across. Arriving early in the day helped reduce waiting times significantly.
The bright yellow color was a signature choice by artist Christo, who used color as a key element in his works rather than hiding structures in their surroundings. The material gleamed on the water and made the structure highly visible from across the lake.
