Terme di San Cristiano, Roman thermae in Triggio district, Benevento, Italy
Terme di San Cristiano is a Roman bath complex located on the west side of Via San Cristiano in Benevento's Triggio district, featuring multiple vaulted rooms as its main structure. Additional ruins have been found within the Casa Campi property, extending the known footprint of this ancient site.
The complex was built in the first half of the second century, during a phase of growth in Benevento, as indicated by inscriptions referring to the Commodian Baths. This period marked a peak of urban expansion under Roman rule.
The baths reveal how Romans used such places as gathering spots, not merely for washing but for socializing. Walking through the space, you can sense how these rooms fit into the daily rhythm of the ancient community.
Two of the vaulted chambers remain in relatively good shape, though they currently serve as storage areas rather than exhibition spaces. The site is accessible near Via Torre della Catena, and you can get views from an adjacent courtyard.
Excavations at Casa Campi uncovered an imperial-era building containing human remains and a burial inscription of someone named Radichis. This discovery links the baths to private life and funeral customs of the ancient city.
