Borromeo Castle

Borromeo Castle is a fortified residence with rectangular stone walls and four corner towers, surrounded by a water-filled moat. The structure demonstrates strong military design principles intended to protect and command the surrounding landscape.

The transformation of an existing farm into a fortified residence began in the 15th century under the Duchy of Milan. The family used this new structure to establish and strengthen their growing power in the region.

The castle was home to one of the region's most prominent merchant families for centuries. The building shows how residents balanced the need for defense with the desire for comfortable living spaces.

The exterior walls can be viewed from a walking path that leads from the nearby village. The interior is not open to visitors, but the surrounding structure is visible and can be observed from the outside.

The water system has been maintained continuously since its original construction 600 years ago. Very few fortified residences in Lombardy have preserved their historic water defenses to this day.
