San Simpliciano - Main cloister, Renaissance cloister in Brera district, Milan, Italy
The main cloister features wide arcades supported by paired stone columns leading to a central courtyard containing five decorative fountains.
Construction began in 1563 under architect Vincenzo Seregni, following the transfer of the basilica and convent to Cassino Benedictines in 1517.
The cloister serves as part of the Theological Faculty, maintaining its educational function while preserving its Renaissance architectural elements.
The cloister connects to the main basilica through a monumental staircase designed by architect Francesco Maria Richini in the early eighteenth century.
The structure includes coupled stone columns rather than single supports, creating a distinct architectural rhythm throughout the colonnade.
