Chiesa di Sant'Abbondio, Mannerist church building in Cremona, Italy.
The Chiesa di Sant'Abbondio is a Mannerist church in Cremona with a single nave, a rectangular presbytery, and late Renaissance architectural details throughout. The building also contains a bell tower and a Renaissance cloister adjacent to the main structure.
The building was substantially renovated in 1575 under Archbishop Borromeo's direction, replacing an earlier Romanesque church that stood since the 10th century. This renovation gave it the Mannerist style you see today.
The interior displays works by important Renaissance and Mannerist painters whose styles shaped the chapel and altar spaces you see today. Walking through the church, you notice how these artistic choices create distinct visual areas within the single nave.
The church is located at Piazza Sant'Abbondio 2 and is easily accessible on foot. You can visit the cloister, walk through the main prayer spaces, and view the various chapels and shrine areas inside.
An interior shrine built in 1624 contains an exact copy of the Holy House of Loreto, a pilgrimage site replicated inside this church. The shrine also houses a Black Madonna statue that was moved here from the Cathedral.
