Torre dell'Olio, Medieval defensive tower in Spoleto, Italy.
The Torre dell'Olio rises 45 meters above Spoleto, featuring thick stone walls that taper from 1.7 meters at the base to 1 meter at the summit.
Built in 1300, this rectangular tower served as part of Spoleto's defense system during a time when the city contained approximately one hundred similar structures.
The tower's name derives from the medieval defense practice of pouring hot oil from its heights onto approaching enemies during military conflicts.
Located near Porta Fuga gate and integrated into Palazzo Vigili, the tower is currently divided among multiple private owners.
Small slanted openings in the tower walls allowed defenders to monitor the area below while maintaining protection behind the thick stone barriers.
