The church of Sant'Ambrogio di Lierna is a Catholic parish church in the town of Lierna, on the eastern shore of Lake Como in Lombardy. It has a plain stone facade, a tiled roof, and a Romanesque bell tower that rises above the surrounding rooftops.
The parish is documented since the early 10th century and was once part of a monastic network until the 13th century. The current building was constructed in 1626 and consecrated the following year by the Bishop of Como, Lazzaro Carafino.
The church is dedicated to Saint Ambrose of Milan, the patron of Lombardy, which explains its deep roots in local religious life. During patron saint celebrations, residents gather here for processions and traditional chants that have been passed down through generations.
The church is in the historic center of Lierna and easy to reach on foot, though there is no parking directly in front of it. Visiting during the day is a good idea, as natural light comes through the small windows and makes the interior details easier to see.
The frescoes inside, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Ambrose, were painted in 1936 by Umberto Marigliani and later restored in the 1970s. The Romanesque bell tower is one of the oldest in Lombardy and dates to before the year 1000.
