Abbazia di San Basilide, Romanesque abbey in San Michele Cavana, Italy.

Abbazia di San Basilide is a monastery complex featuring a Romanesque stone church with a semicircular apse and sturdy walls. The entrance displays carved capitals decorated with symbols representing the four evangelists.

Bernard degli Uberti, an advisor to Countess Matilda of Canossa, established this Vallombrosan monastery between 1096 and 1106. The foundation coincided with a wave of monastic renewal across northern and central Italy during that period.

Saint Basilide, whose remains rest in the crypt below, has drawn pilgrims and the faithful who come to pay respects at this sacred burial place. The site continues to function as a place of spiritual devotion where visitors can experience the reverence connected to early Christian martyrs.

The complex is located at Strada Comunale della Badia 10 in San Michele Cavana within the Diocese of Parma. Visitors should approach as a functioning sacred space where religious practices and devotions may be taking place.

The monastery retains original medieval features such as twin lancet windows and columns despite undergoing numerous transformations across nine centuries. This blend of preserved original elements and later modifications tells the story of how the building has adapted while maintaining its core identity.
