Casa del mercante Boniforte da Concorrezzo

Casa del mercante Boniforte da Concorrezzo, Renaissance palace in Piazza delle Erbe, Mantua, Italy

The Casa del mercante Boniforte da Concorrezzo is a three-story palace on Piazza delle Erbe with a terracotta facade displaying Gothic details and ornamental patterns. A covered portico with red Veronese marble columns frames the ground level and creates a transition between the public square and the private residence.

Giovanni Boniforte da Concorezzo, a textile merchant from Brianza, commissioned this palace in 1455 during the reign of Ludovico III Gonzaga. The residence emerged during a period when successful traders built grand homes to display their wealth and status in the expanding Renaissance city.

The architectural elements incorporate Venetian influences with oriental patterns, representing the intersection of trade routes and artistic styles in Renaissance Italy.

The palace is located on Piazza delle Erbe in central Mantua, near the Ducal Palace and the Basilica of Sant'Andrea. Its position makes it convenient to explore on foot alongside other major landmarks of the city center.

The facade was originally decorated with small gilded leaves that have since faded from view. Latin inscriptions carved into the portico architraves record the exact year of construction, offering a rare documented marker of when this merchant house was built.
