Église San Sebastiano, Church building in Panicale, Umbria, Italy

San Sebastiano is a small red-brick church on the edge of Panicale, a hilltop village in Umbria, and is listed as Italian national heritage and a religious museum. Its plain, rectangular facade conceals an interior with two side altars, small choir galleries, and a large fresco covering the back wall.

The church was built at the end of the 15th century by the local community, shortly after a plague had hit the area hard. In 1623, the original timber roof was replaced by the ceiling seen today, and further parts of the building were renewed in the decades that followed.

The church is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the patron saint invoked against plague, which explains its placement next to a former hospital. Inside, information panels in several languages, including Braille, help visitors read the artworks at their own pace.

The church is generally visited as part of an urban trekking route that starts at the local tourist office, rather than as a standalone stop. The interior is on a single level with terracotta tile floors and accessible parking is available nearby, making it manageable for most visitors.

The fresco on the back wall, signed by Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino, in 1505, includes a background landscape drawn from the view of Lake Trasimeno as seen from Panicale. Stepping outside after the visit and looking toward the lake, it is easy to recognize how closely the painted background mirrors the real view.
