Forte Busa Grande, Military fortress in Vignola-Falesina, Italy
Forte Busa Grande is a stone fortress at 1,407 meters (4,620 feet) elevation featuring two cannons and four flagpoles displaying the Italian flag against the mountain backdrop. The structure spans two levels and offers views across the surrounding valleys and peaks.
An Austrian military fortification was built in 1915 under Captain Emil Huetter's supervision and completed in just three and a half months using Russian prisoners. The structure formed part of the First World War defense system in this mountain region.
The fortress serves as a memorial to soldiers who fought in this mountain region. Wooden sculptures along the walls honor those who served here during the First World War.
After restoration in 2016, the fortress contains information panels and photographs documenting its military role. Wear appropriate footwear for mountain paths and check local weather conditions before visiting.
The fortress earned the nickname 'The Invisible Fort' because its construction integrates so perfectly with the surrounding mountain landscape. This building technique cleverly concealed the structure from enemy attack by air and ground.
