Federation of the Seven Communities, Alpine plateau in Province of Vicenza, Italy
The Federation of the Seven Communities is a plateau in the Province of Vicenza in Italy, spreading across gentle hills and forests. Eight municipalities share the territory, which sits between low peaks and open pastureland.
The alliance of municipalities existed until 1807 as a self-governing territory with local administration. French troops ended this autonomy during the Napoleonic campaigns in northern Italy.
Mountain pastures across the plateau support dairy farming that follows methods passed down through generations. Small farms process milk on site and sell their products directly to visitors and traders.
Walking trails cross the area in all directions and connect the villages with pastures and hills. Winter sports areas focus on certain sections and offer slopes and trails for different levels.
Military structures from World War I are scattered across the plateau and testify to heavy fighting in the mountains. Some sections allow access to preserved trenches and tunnels from that period.
