Organo della chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi a Roma

Organo della chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi a Roma, Pipe organ at San Luigi dei Francesi church, Rome, Italy

The Merklin organ at San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome sits on a marble platform at the counter-facade inside a neoclassical wooden case decorated with gilded details. The instrument has three 56-note manuals, a 30-note pedalboard, and 38 stops connected through mechanical transmission with a Barker lever system.

Joseph Merklin completed this instrument in 1881 to replace an earlier organ from 1580 that Cardinal Contarelli had given to the church. The new installation continued a centuries-long tradition of supporting the musical worship there.

The organ anchors the musical life of Rome's French national church, supporting worship services and cultural events. It represents a link between French musical traditions and the city's religious heritage.

The organ is visible from the church gallery and can be heard during services and concerts. Check ahead to see if special musical events are scheduled during your visit.

Giovanni Tamburini restored the instrument in 1980 while preserving its original sound character. A second restoration by Saverio Anselmi Tamburini in 2005 ensured its continued survival.
