Castello di Solofra

Castello di Solofra is a medieval fortification built on a hilltop at the base of Monte Pergola, with views toward the town center and surrounding mountains. The surviving wall remnants show different building phases and architectural solutions from several centuries of construction.

The castle was built in the 9th century by the Lombards as a border fortification between the principalities of Salerno and Benevento. It held strategic importance for controlling this contested region during the early medieval period.

Local stories speak of an underground tunnel that allegedly connected the castle to Palazzo Orsini, with visitors reporting unexplained sounds within the structures. This legend has taken root in the town's memory, though its historical basis remains unclear.
