San Francesco di Paola Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Cosenza, Italy
The San Francesco di Paola Bridge is a modern cable-stayed structure that spans the Crati River and connects the Contrada Gergeri and Via Reggio Calabria areas of the city. The structure accommodates four vehicle lanes along with a central pedestrian walkway.
The project emerged in the late 1990s as part of an urban renewal initiative for the Gergeri district. Completion of this structure became a significant milestone in transforming southeastern areas of the city.
The bridge takes its name from Saint Francis of Paola, a 15th-century mystic revered throughout Calabria. This naming connects the modern structure to the local spiritual heritage of the region.
The bridge provides a seamless route across the river and is easily accessible both by vehicle and on foot. Visitors can cross the river from the central pedestrian area or view the structure from various vantage points.
The bridge's inclined pylon tilts at a 52-degree angle and weighs approximately 800 tons. This architectural feature gives the structure a distinctive silhouette that stands out in the urban landscape.
