Saint Benedict church, Roman Catholic church in Limone sul Garda, Italy

The church of San Benedetto Abate is the parish church of Limone sul Garda, built between 1685 and 1690 to a design by Andrea Pernici da Como. Its bell tower was added in the 18th century. Inside, the main altar by Cristoforo Benedetti, completed by his son Teodoro and blessed in 1724, holds an altarpiece of the Deposition of Jesus painted by Battista del Moro in 1547.

The present church was built between 1685 and 1690 to a design by Andrea Pernici da Como, replacing an earlier church probably founded in the 10th century as a dependency of the pieve of Tremosine. Limone became an independent parish on 18 September 1532. The bell tower was added in the 18th century, and the church was consecrated on 11 October 1879 by Bishop Daniele Comboni.

The building is dedicated to Saint Benedict, a name reflecting the deep Catholic roots of this lakeside village. Inside, you can see religious artworks created by local and regional artists who served the community across different periods.

The interior is open for visitors to view the artworks and architecture up close during most times of the day. Plan your visit outside of regular service times if you prefer a quieter experience and more time to look around.

The church was consecrated on 11 October 1879 by Bishop Daniele Comboni, who had been baptised there himself; he later worked as a missionary in Africa and was canonised in 2003. The main altarpiece is older than the building: Battista del Moro painted the Deposition of Jesus in 1547.
