Megalithic Walls of Altamura

The Megalithic Walls of Altamura are ancient defensive structures built from stone blocks fitted together across a long stretch of terrain. They display the typical width and height characteristic of this type of fortification.

These defensive works were built in ancient times around the 4th century BCE as the earliest fortifications of the region. Many centuries later, in the 13th century, new walls were constructed under Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, partly overlapping with the older structures.

The gate called Porta Alba shows how early inhabitants of this region built defensive structures that still stand today. This entrance and the surrounding walls reveal insights into the daily life and craftsmanship of the ancient community that lived here.

The walls run along Via Mura Megalitiche, where information boards explain details about the structure to visitors. This location offers good conditions for exploring and understanding the ancient fortification.

Excavations near the walls have uncovered ancient burial sites containing pottery, tools, and lamps from everyday life. These discoveries offer insights into how the people who built and used these fortifications actually lived.
