Fontana del Gigante

Fontana del Gigante is a marble fountain standing in the center of Piazza del Duomo in Carrara. It displays a towering Neptune figure perched above two dolphins that channel water into a basin, creating a striking focal point in the cathedral square.

The Neptune sculpture was originally created by Baccio Bandinelli for a different purpose before being repurposed as a fountain. It found its permanent position in the cathedral square during the Renaissance, when such monumental water features became symbols of civic pride.

The fountain marks the intersection of Renaissance artistry, local marble craftsmanship, and the architectural heritage of the Carrara cathedral square.

The fountain sits in the center of Piazza del Duomo, making it easy to find when visiting the cathedral area. The water features and basin can be viewed and approached from all sides without barriers.

The oversized Neptune statue earned its 'Giant' name due to its unprecedented scale compared to standard sculpture dimensions of the Renaissance period.
