Madonna Pellegrina church, Religious shrine in Rovereto, Italy.
Madonna Pellegrina church is a hilltop shrine above Rovereto featuring a main altar enclosed by ornamental railings. The interior is covered with ex-votos, personal offerings left by worshippers on the walls throughout the space.
The shrine was built in 1603 and houses a 16th-century tabernacle from an earlier period. In 1751, major architectural changes were made by Giovanni Scottini di Lizzana.
The name refers to the Pilgrim Madonna, honoring the tradition of people traveling to this hilltop shrine seeking spiritual solace. Visitors can see personal offerings left on the interior walls, evidence of ongoing devotion from local worshippers.
The site sits on a hill outside the city and can be reached on foot or by car. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the climb is steep and paths can be uneven.
Before its temporary closure in 1787, hermits lived at this site and cared for the shrine for visiting pilgrims. This religious community eventually disappeared, changing how the place operated afterward.
