Martinskapelle beim Giernhof, Chapel in Graun im Vinschgau, Italy
The Martinskapelle beim Giernhof is a chapel situated on the western shore of Lake Reschensee near a farmstead in Graun im Vinschgau. The building features a rectangular brick construction with baroque design, a rounded apse, and a gabled roof crowned by a ridge turret.
The chapel was built during the baroque period and maintained its original structure over the centuries. When the reservoir was created in the late 1940s, the structure survived the flooding and remained on the western shore of the lake.
The chapel displays a neoclassical main altar depicting Saint Martin in its interior. Beside it stands a smaller baroque altar that may have come from the former St. Catherine's parish church.
The chapel is located along the Adige cycling route that runs between Landeck and Verona, providing good accessibility by bike. Visitors can explore the building and its interior during daily opening hours.
A wooden wayside cross stands next to the chapel with inscriptions in both German and Italian. This bilingual character reflects the cultural heritage of South Tyrol and a region where two languages and traditions coexist.
