Saint Michael hermitage

Saint Michael hermitage sits inside a natural cave at 1160 meters elevation, offering views across Lake Garda and the Aurunci Mountains. The structure is built into the rock face and uses the cave as its foundation.

The religious site originated in the ninth century and underwent major reconstruction in 1893 with Neo-Gothic elements added. This rebuilding shaped its current form.

Two annual processions connect the hermitage to village life, with locals carrying a statue between this remote shrine and the Annunziata church below. These ceremonies reflect how the community keeps the site woven into their spiritual calendar.

Access is through a seven-kilometer hiking trail from Rifugio Pornito parking area, requiring about ninety minutes of walking. Good fitness and sturdy shoes are needed for this mountain path.

A carved rock niche in the hermitage holds a statue of Saint Michael that, according to local accounts, repeatedly returned to this spot whenever moved elsewhere. This persistence gave the shrine a special reputation.
