Saint Michael hermitage, Mountain hermitage in Tremosine, Italy

Saint Michael hermitage stands in the Val San Michele on a small rise off the slopes of Monte Tremalzo, in Tremosine sul Garda. The church has a single nave of about 6.75 by 7.30 metres, split by a round arch and covered by a wooden truss ceiling. It ends in a pentagonal apse with ribbed lunette vaulting from the late 15th or early 16th century, and a long portico precedes the facade with its small bell gable.

The church is of early medieval origin: masonry analysis and finds suggest construction in the 7th–8th century, and it is first documented in a bull of Pope Urban III in 1187. The present structure dates largely to the 14th century. In 1679 the Veronese priest Florenio Feliberi built the adjoining dwelling, turning the church into a hermitage; he died there in 1694 and was buried in a tomb prepared in 1686. After other hermits, the site was abandoned from the 19th century and restored in 1994 by the ANA group of Vesio.

The church was first documented in a bull of Pope Urban III in 1187. Its name comes from the valley, Val San Michele, where two paths from Tremosine and Tignale met and split again toward the Lorina and Tremalzo passes. The archangel Michael was patron of the Longobards and of the charcoal burners and blacksmiths once living here, groups linked to the site's founding.
