Monte Caplone, Mountain summit in Lombardy, Italy
Monte Caplone is a mountain summit in the Prealpi Bresciane e Gardesane range that rises to 1976 meters with dramatic rock faces on its western and southern sides. The peak is defined by four distinct ridges that extend from the main summit across the surrounding terrain.
The peak was formerly called Cima delle Guardie, named after 19th century military posts that monitored the border between Austria-Hungary and Italy. These guard stations still mark the landscape today and reflect the strategic importance of the area.
The mountain paths contain numerous military structures from World War I, while the surrounding environment houses rare plant species including Saxifraga tombeanensis.
The main trailhead starts at Cima Rest village, positioned at 1200 meters elevation, with the round trip taking about three hours. The terrain is generally accessible for hikers comfortable with steady elevation gain and rocky sections.
The summit serves as the starting point for four distinct ridge systems, with the southeastern extension leading into relatively unexplored terrain. These different ridge paths offer varied routes for hikers seeking different levels of challenge.
