Amarube Viaduct, Railway viaduct in Kami, Japan
The Amarube Viaduct spans 310 meters across a coastal valley, connecting two mountains with a reinforced concrete structure rising 41 meters above ground level.
The original steel truss bridge, constructed in 1912, served as a vital transportation link until 2010, when a new concrete bridge replaced the aging structure.
The preserved bridge sections now form the Sky Station observation facility, allowing visitors to experience the engineering heritage of early Japanese railway construction.
The modern viaduct incorporates transparent acrylic wind barriers that enable trains to operate safely in wind speeds up to 30 meters per second.
The bridge features an extradosed design, combining elements of cable-stayed and girder bridge construction techniques with prestressed concrete technology.
