Miraikan, Technology museum in Aomi district, Tokyo, Japan
Miraikan is the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Aomi, a district in the Kōtō ward of Tokyo. The exhibition floors span multiple levels and feature interactive stations covering future technologies, medical research, and global environmental issues.
The facility opened its doors in July 2001 as part of an initiative to promote public understanding of science and technology. Construction was carried out through a joint effort by architectural firms Nikken Sekkei and Kume Sekkei.
The central hall is dominated by Geo-Cosmos, a glowing sphere that displays real-time satellite data and shows the planet from a space perspective. Visitors can attend robot demonstrations and watch androids perform everyday tasks, offering insights into current research.
The complex is situated within Tokyo Academic Park and opens Wednesday through Monday from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with advance online booking recommended. A visit typically takes two to three hours depending on how many demonstrations you attend.
The Dome Theater GAIA projects scientific content using 4K RGB laser technology onto a curved screen that surrounds the entire field of view. The stereoscopic films create spatial depth that places viewers right into the scenes being shown.
