Kitano Tenmangū, Shinto shrine in Kitano district, Kyoto, Japan

The shrine complex features a main sanctuary with ornate wooden carvings, two ceremonial gates, and 1,500 plum trees in its expansive gardens.

Emperor Murakami established the shrine in 947 to honor Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar who became deified as Tenjin after his death.

Students from across Japan visit the shrine to request success in their examinations, as Tenjin represents the patron deity of education.

The shrine opens daily from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with a monthly market taking place on the 25th offering antiques and traditional crafts.

The shrine maintains a special plum garden where maiko and geiko perform tea ceremonies during the Baikasai festival each February.
