Waseda University, Private university in Shinjuku, Japan
Waseda is a private institution of higher education in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, spreading across multiple buildings and street blocks. The campus includes lecture halls, laboratory buildings, administrative offices, and the Okuma Auditorium hall with its prominent clock tower.
Shigenobu Okuma founded the institution in 1882 under the name Tokyo Senmon Gakko to offer modern education outside government control. Two decades later, it received its present name and expanded into a full university.
The university libraries and open courtyards attract both students and visitors who come to read or walk between lectures. Students gather in the cafeterias and on the lawns, where you can observe the daily life of a large academic community.
The campus is located in the Waseda district and can be reached via several subway stations, with many buildings open to visitors. Some areas such as museums and theaters regularly open to the public and host events.
The Aizu Museum on campus displays Japanese and Asian artworks that are often overlooked by visitors outside the academic community. The theater spaces host regular performances that welcome guests from outside as well.
