Kanmon Straits, Maritime strait between Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu, Japan
The Kanmon Straits span 700 meters in width and connect the Inland Sea of Japan with the Sea of Japan between Honshu and Kyushu islands.
The Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185 took place in these waters, marking the final naval engagement between the Minamoto and Taira clans during the Genpei War.
The annual Kanmon Straits Summer Festival features synchronized fireworks displays launched simultaneously from both Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu sides of the strait.
Three transport options cross the strait: the Kanmonkyo Bridge for vehicles, two underground tunnels for cars and trains, and regular ferry services.
The strait experiences strong tidal currents reaching speeds of up to 10 knots, requiring specialized navigation systems and experienced pilots for safe vessel passage.
