Kuroishi, Municipal center in Aomori Prefecture, Japan
Kuroishi is a city in Aomori Prefecture spanning about 217 square kilometers between Hirosaki and the Hakkoda Mountains. The area contains numerous shops, residential districts, and traditional structures that shape daily life.
The area was once Tsugaru clan territory and became an independent domain in 1809. The current municipality was officially established on July 1, 1954, combining these historical roots with modern administration.
The Nakamachi neighborhood preserves a covered shopping arcade from 1656, recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The arcade still displays its original structure and remains actively used by residents and visitors today.
The Tourist Information Center at Midorimachi offers free Wi-Fi, parking, and barrier-free facilities for visitors. Note that the location is easiest to reach by car and most services are available during daytime hours.
From August 15 to 16, about 3,000 participants perform the centuries-old Kuroishi Yosare Bon dance through the streets. This dance remains relatively unknown outside the region but strongly shapes the annual festival.
