Chikusei is a municipality in Ibaraki Prefecture that lies on mostly flat land crossed by the Kinugawa and Kokaigawa rivers. The city includes agricultural plains in the south and a hilly zone in the north that forms part of the Abukuma Mountain Range.
The municipality came into being on March 28th, 2005, when Shimodate merged with the three neighboring towns of Sekijo, Akeno, and Kyowa. This administrative reorganization aimed to simplify governance and support regional economic development.
