Daisen, Administrative city in eastern Akita Prefecture, Japan
Daisen is an administrative city in Akita Prefecture that sits between the Ōu Mountains to the east and the Dewa range to the west. The municipality brings together several former towns, with Ōmagari serving as the main center, and spreads across valleys and smaller settlements along river corridors.
The current administrative structure formed on March 22, 2005, when seven towns and one village from Semboku District merged into a single municipality. This reorganization brought previously separate communities under one local government, creating one of the larger municipalities in eastern Akita.
The city takes its name from the nearby mountains, reflecting the connection between the local geography and everyday life. Each August, people gather in Ōmagari, the largest district, for one of the country's oldest competitive fireworks displays, where pyrotechnicians show their work during both daylight hours and at night.
The city has public schools across its districts, with most neighborhoods offering access to elementary and secondary education. Main transport routes pass through Ōmagari, where regional connections and local services are centered.
Every February 10, the Kariwano district holds a tug-of-war festival that has continued for over 500 years, using two enormous ropes. Local residents and visitors pull together on these massive ropes, which are woven from rice straw and weigh several tons.
