Kitaibaraki City, Coastal settlement in northeastern Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan

The city spans across 186 square kilometers, with 80 percent of the territory consisting of mountainous forests bordering the Pacific Ocean.

Following the development of coal mines in the Joban fields during the early 1900s, multiple towns merged to establish Kitaibaraki city in 1956.

The Japan Art Institute maintains its presence in the former residence of artists Okakura Kakuzo and Yokoyama Taikan from the late 19th century.

The city contains twelve elementary schools, five middle schools, and one public high school operated by the Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education.

The Rokkakudo, a red hexagonal building overlooking the Pacific Ocean, stands as a reconstructed landmark following the 2011 tsunami destruction.
