Shibata, Castle town at Niigata Prefecture coast, Japan

Shibata extends across 533 square kilometers of land between the Echigo Plain and Sea of Japan, containing mountains, rivers, and agricultural fields.

The city developed from a castle settlement during the Edo period when the Mizoguchi family controlled the region from their three-story fortification.

The Shibata Castle Park displays 260 Somei Yoshino cherry trees and hosts seasonal festivals with traditional lantern illuminations near the moat.

Travelers reach Shibata through JR East Uetsu Main Line trains or via the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway, with regular connections from major cities.

Local farmers produce premium Koshihikari rice in the fertile Kajikawa river basin, while maintaining traditional sake brewing practices.
