Nishinoomote occupies the northern section of Tanegashima island, with the East China Sea to the west and Pacific Ocean to the east.

The region transformed from Kitatane Village in 1889 to Nishinoomote town in 1926, before gaining city status on October 1, 1958.

Local agriculture focuses on sugar cane and sweet potato cultivation, maintaining traditions that date back to the initial sugar cane introduction in 1824.

The Nishinoomote Port connects travelers to major destinations including Kagoshima, Tokyo, Kobe, Osaka, and Okinawa through regular ferry services.

The city encompasses Mageshima island and maintains a population density of 69 persons per square kilometer across its 205 square kilometers.
