Uonuma, Mountain city in Niigata Prefecture, Japan
The city of Uonuma covers 946 square kilometers of inland territory in south-central Niigata Prefecture, bordering Fukushima Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture.
The name Uonuma first appeared in Japanese historical records Shoku Nihongi in 702 AD, and during the Edo period the area was under direct control of Tokugawa shogunate.
The Dai no Ban Bon Odori festival and international snowball competition represent local traditions that bring the community together throughout different seasons.
The city operates nine elementary schools, six middle schools, and connects to other regions through the JR East Jōetsu Line and Tadami Line railway services.
Uonuma produces premium koshihikari rice in its fertile fields, while the Okutadami Dam and Ginzandaira provide opportunities for outdoor activities throughout the year.
