Minamiuonuma

Minamiuonuma is a city in the mountainous region of Niigata Prefecture, stretching across valleys and peaks that receive abundant snowfall during winter. The area is known for its ski resorts and surrounding mountain terrain.

The city was formed on November 1, 2004, through the consolidation of several towns and villages across the Niigata region. This merger created a larger administrative unit from previously separate communities.

The region produces premium Koshihikari rice, grown in fertile valleys using farming methods handed down over time. This rice is recognized for its quality and flavor.

The Joetsu Shinkansen train line connects the city to Tokyo with multiple daily services providing direct access to the ski resorts. The train journey offers convenient travel for visitors from larger cities.

The Naeba Ski Resort transforms into a music venue during summer, hosting one of Japan's largest outdoor music festivals. This festival draws thousands of music fans from across the country.
