Arato Castle

Arato Castle is a mountain fortress in Yuzawa with foundations and defensive walls arranged across multiple levels. The site leverages the natural hilltop terrain to maximize defensive advantages across its tiered layout.

The Uesugi clan built this fortress in 1578 to control and defend their regional territory. The site was abandoned by 1598 as the political situation in the region shifted and new defense strategies emerged.

This fortress served the Uesugi clan as both a residence and military stronghold, reflecting how regional lords organized their power. The layout and remaining structures show how such mountain fortifications functioned as centers of control for the surrounding lands.

The ruins sit about 15 minutes on foot from Yukawa Station, making it accessible for most visitors. The terrain is uneven with natural slopes, so wearing sturdy shoes helps you navigate the site comfortably.

The site contains earthen mounds that outline the original fortress layout and provide visible clues about how the fort was planned. These raised earth features are often overlooked by visitors but clearly show the intended arrangement of the buildings and defenses.
