Joso, Urban center in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
The city stretches across 123 square kilometers of predominantly flat terrain, with the Kinugawa River flowing through its residential and agricultural areas.
Established in 1889 as Mitsukaido village, the settlement developed into a transportation hub along the Kinugawa River during the Edo period.
The population of 59,314 residents includes a substantial Brazilian community, creating a multicultural environment within this Japanese municipality.
Three industrial parks and extensive farmland covering 50 percent of the territory form the foundation of the local economy.
The city changed its name from Mitsukaido to Joso in 2006 following the absorption of neighboring Ishige town.
