Kōriyama Station, Railway junction in Kōriyama, Japan.
Kōriyama Station is a large railway junction in the city of Kōriyama, serving five major lines and receiving both conventional trains and high-speed Shinkansen services. The facility includes three island platforms and one bay platform for regional trains, along with separate elevated platforms for Shinkansen connections.
The railway facility opened on July 16, 1887, as part of the Nippon Railway service between Kōriyama and Kuroiso. Later expansions introduced connections to Sendai and Shiogama, turning the site into a key junction in the regional network.
Departure melodies at the platforms are performed by local hip hop group Greeeen and play throughout the facility. This musical feature connects daily commutes with the regional music scene.
The facility sits roughly 227 kilometers from Tokyo along the Tohoku Main Line, linking several regional and long-distance routes. Travelers will find signage in Japanese and English, along with elevators between different levels.
The building underwent four complete reconstructions between 1887 and 1980, keeping pace with growing passenger numbers. Each reconstruction produced a larger and more modern facility than the previous version.
