The municipality stretches across 563 square kilometers in southwestern Miyazaki Prefecture, bordering Kumamoto Prefecture to the northeast and Kagoshima Prefecture to the southwest.

The area started as a military settlement called Hinamori during the Nara period, later controlled by the Ito clan until their defeat by the Shimazu clan in 1572.

The annual Water Festival takes place on the first Saturday of August, while the Firefly Festival illuminates Idenoyama Park every May.

The city maintains several educational facilities, including elementary schools, junior high schools, and public high schools, serving the local population of 42,139 residents.

The Inyoseki couple rocks stand as natural monuments in the region, where locals consider them deities associated with marriage and childbirth.
