Nogata, Industrial city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan

Nogata is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture on the northern part of Japan's main island, where two rivers meet. The area consists of flat valleys, gentle hills and a settlement that spreads along the watercourses.

A meteor fell here in 861 and was recorded as the first such event in Japan. Later, in 1626, a castle town emerged under the Kuroda clan, which gradually grew into a mining center.

The coal museum displays locomotives and tools from the days when mines were still operating. Visitors can trace how deeply mining shaped everyday life for residents.

The city sits roughly halfway between Kitakyushu and Fukuoka City and can be reached by train via the Chikuho Line. A visit works well when combined with trips to either larger city.

The tulip festival along the riverside draws around two hundred thousand people each spring, who stroll among the flowerbeds. The park along the water offers paths and resting spots that become especially busy during bloom time.
