Hanayashiki, Amusement park in Asakusa, Tokyo
Hanayashiki is an amusement park in Asakusa, Tokyo, that combines nineteen different rides within a compact area. The attractions range from a classic wooden roller coaster and a haunted house called Sakura Ghost to an observation tower and carousels tucked between trees and historic buildings.
The site began in 1853 as a flower garden during the final years of Japan's Edo period. After several transformations and the introduction of mechanical attractions during the Meiji era, it evolved into one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the country.
The name translates literally as flower villa, a reminder that the site once grew ornamental plants for the public. Today visitors experience a mix of traditional Japanese decorations and nostalgic rides arranged along narrow paths and small plazas.
The entrance is easily reached from the main streets of Asakusa, and the park sits just a short walk from the Sensō Temple. Visitors pay a base admission of 1200 yen for adults and 600 yen for children and seniors, with additional tickets required for individual rides.
The Bee Tower is a 45-meter (148-foot) observation deck that offers views across the old Asakusa district and the modern Tokyo Skytree. The vantage point connects traditional temple and residential quarters with the city's contemporary skyline.
